Grace in Action
Grace is one of the attributes of God that I most want to emulate. I use 1 Peter 4:10 as my life verse and it’s the verse I try to base my business on. I even use Grace in the name of my business. Still, I sometimes fail miserably in showing grace to others.
Yesterday my wife, Becky gave me a wonderful example of what true grace is. Becky was hit by a car. Now when I say she was hit by a car, I don’t mean her car was hit by another car. She…her body…was hit by a car. She had been out for a walk and was waiting for the signal before crossing Illinois Road at the Shorewood stop light. As the light turned green and the Walk symbol flashed, she started across the street. A car came through the intersection and turned into the crosswalk, hitting Becky.
She suffered bruises and abrasions and a very sore body but no broken bones. Please understand this could have been very serious and we are grateful that she is OK. Now here’s where Becky showed that she understands God’s Grace and how to share it with others.
The driver the car was of course very shaken. When I arrived at the scene, there were firemen, a policeman and various onlookers. Off to the side was a woman looking on with what appeared to be a mixture of angst, fear, nervousness, concern, worry and so many more emotions. This of course was the driver. I kind of nodded in her direction but gave my full attention to Becky. Soon the firemen finished examining Becky for injuries and the policeman came over after finishing his report. He called the driver over and gave us each the incident number. The driver was shaking almost uncontrollably.
Becky, with compassion many of us might not have felt, called her over, assured her she was all right and pulled her into a hug. That is GRACE! Becky is most certainly a “faithful steward of God’s grace in its various forms” Thank you sweetie for giving me and those at the accident scene, especially the driver, an example of grace in action.
I don’t pretend to understand why when accidents happen, some suffer major injuries or even death and others walk away. I am so grateful that Becky walked away with minor injuries and a full measure of grace. I can’t and won’t imagine it happening any other way.
Here’s 1 Peter 4:10: “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms” NIV
Following Becky’s example,
May we all serve with grace…
